The detail about Raleigh-Durham lying in that relative snowfall minimum while coastal areas got hammered really shows how tricky these storms can be to forcast. Back in '09 we had a similar setup in the Midwest where the models nailed the heavy bands but totally missed the narrow spacing betwene them.
I truly feel for the public across the region—these have been miserable conditions to deal with. It will be interesting to see an in-depth verification of both the commercial and government forecast models, coupled with an evaluation of the forecast messaging and timing. Unfortunate social media voices were at each other’s throats...does little in the public interest.
Duke Energy is asking folks to cut back power usage between 4am and 10 am Monday due to demand on system. Hope this helps avoid additional situations similar to the ongoing crisis in Mississippi.
