BalancedWx Science Video #1 - Dr. Tony Lyza
Talking tornado damage and the lack of EF5 tornadoes in recent years
I am so excited to share the first Balanced Weather science video, my conversation with Dr. Tony Lyza of NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory. Tony and his co-authors Drs. Harold Brooks and Makenzie Krocak recently published a paper in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society titled “Where Have the EF5s Gone? A Closer Look at the “Drought” of the Most Violent Tornadoes in the United States.” In this conversation, Tony talks about the history of the tornado damage scale, possible explanations for the lack of EF5 tornadoes in the last decade, and what the findings in their paper may mean more broadly for our national tornado climatology database. I think you will find it a fascinating hour if you have interest in severe weather and tornadoes.
This is the first of what I plan to be a series of conversations with scientists and researchers to provide an opportunity to learn more about meteorology and related sciences, the people that do the science, and what their work means to all of us. As a reminder, if you are a paid subscriber to Balanced Weather, you can participate in these interviews when they are recorded and will have the opportunity to ask your own questions of these scientists (paid subscribers can also post questions and comments on all BalancedWx posts). You can become a paid subscriber at a special discounted rate below.
